Sarah and Max Ray with their son, Samuel. Samuel, meaning "God hears" in Hebrew, was born happy and healthy at 36 weeks thanks to exceptional maternity care at Berger. An emergency delivery, a healthy mom and baby F ew babies have a more fitting first name than Samuel Ray. It means “God hears” in Hebrew. Samuel arrived by an emergency cesarean section at the Berger Health System Maternity Center last July. “When I heard his little cry, I just said, ‘Thank you, Jesus,’” says his mother, Sarah Ray. “I knew God had listened to my prayers.” She credits her firstborn’s safe arrival with the exceptional care both she and her son received at Berger. A dangerous complication Like all moms-to-be, Sarah had hoped for an easy pregnancy. But in her third trimester she developed a severe form of pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia—characterized by high blood pressure and protein in the urine—can be life- threatening for both mom and baby. And when it is, the only cure is immediate delivery. That’s why Berger obstetrician Lauren Fuller, DO, made the critical decision to induce Sarah at 36 weeks—a slightly premature delivery date.
